Having produced the Lightning Manual Volume 3, I assumed that was as far as I could go. Then I became embroiled in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restore the very first Lightning – P1B XA847 – a boyhood dream.
I approached various major companies to see if they would assist in preserving what is arguably the most iconic and historically significant British jet fighter produced. Sadly, they all seemed nonplussed. A quick brainstorm convinced me that we could raise some funds by writing a book, and so Lightning Volume 4: A Tribute to the P1B was produced. It sold well and allowed us to relocate the aircraft to Manston and start the huge task of polishing.
